May I bring point of correction or may I say precision to this short article? While there was a "referendum" on May 1972 on the creation of a United instead of a Federated state, the part of Cameroon which went to Nigeria was not involved in this exercise. Clearly the part of Anglophone Cameroon which today constitutes part of Gongola state in Nigeria was administered separately by the British from the Southern Cameroons. It is the Southern Cameroons that first opted in 1961 to join the French Cameroons in a federated state and which was involved in the so-called referendum in 1972.
