On ne le redira jamais assez: quand on est en cavale, on la joue profil bas sur les réseaux sociaux. Exemple avec l'histoire de Maxi Sopo, 26 ans, né au Cameroun et arrivé aux Etats-Unis en 2003, à Seattle. Premier petit boulot: vendre des roses dans les boites de nuit. Mais rapidement, il est soupçonné d'avoir participé à une fraude bancaire, avec un complice, récoltant plus de 200.000 dollars. Il s'enfuit alors, raconte la BBC.

Sans nouvelles de lui, les autorités américaines ont réussi à retrouver sa trace, à Cancun, au Mexique, grâce à Facebook. Maxi Sopo décrivait dans ses statuts sa merveilleuse vie. Il a par exemple indiqué «vivre dans un paradis», étant «ici juste pour s'amuser». Des statuts qui n'ont pas beaucoup plu à la police, Michael Scoville, de la justice américaine, considère qu'«il ne vivait pas du tout de la façon dont nous voulions qu'il le fasse, vu les charges qui lui sont reprochées».

Maxi Sopo s'est fait griller en acceptant comme ami sur Facebook un ancien employé du département de justice américain, qu'il avait croisé à plusieurs reprises dans les boites de nuit. Ce dernier, qui ignorait que Maxi Sopo était en fuite, a pu ainsi avoir accès à toutes les informations mises en ligne par le jeune homme.

Au fur et à mesure des statuts, les autorités ont déduit que Maxi Sopo était à Cancun, au Mexique. la justice mexicaine a ensuite arrêté le jeune homme, le mois dernier.

a man on the run, wanted for fraud by US authorities, inadvertently revealed where he was hiding through a series of extravagant Facebook updates.Cameroon-born Maxi Sopo's messages made it clear he was living the high life in the Mexican resort of Cancun.He also added a former US justice department official to his friend list who ended up helping to track him down.US officials say Mr Sopo and an associate falsely obtained more than $200,000 in credit from banks.In recent status updates Mr Sopo said he was "loving it", described himself as "living in paradise" and said he was "just here to have fun".

"He was making posts about how beautiful life is and how he was having a good time with his buddies," said Assistant US Attorney Michael Scoville.

"He was definitely not living the way we wanted him to be living, given the charges he was facing," he added.

The 26-year-old, who is currently in custody in Mexico City, initially sold roses in Seattle nightclubs after arriving in the US in 2003. He then allegedly moved on to bank fraud.

The former justice department official whom Mr Sopo befriended on the social networking site said he had only met the fugitive a few times in the city's nightclubs and had no idea that he was on the run.

He was able to discover exactly where Mr Sopo was living and the information was passed to the Mexican authorities who arrested him last month.

One month ago, Maxi Sopo was a free man, resting deep within the embrace of hedonistic wiles. Now, he is probably resisting the aggressively persistent embrace of “Big” Bubba from cell block D, as federal authorities have finally apprehended the flighty criminal.

All thanks to the social networking behemoth known as Facebook.

Federal authorities claim the 26-year-old Cameroonian withdrew over $200,000 from several banks and credit unions in the Seattle area by way of fallacy-laced persuasive methods.

After hearing that law enforcement was closing in on him, the sly thief fled the U.S., opting to take residence in one of Mexico's premiere tourist locations.

Federal agents combed cyber space in an attempt to find info on Sopo with each search ending to no avail, that is, until the evasive bandit got cocky.

"He was making posts about how beautiful life is and how he was having a good time with his buddies,” remarked Michael Scoville, the U.S. Assistant Attorney that assisted in nabbing the new age robber. Secret Service agent Seth Reeg found Sopo on the popular web destination boasting of “living in paradise” and loving it, even posting an inspirational note designed to enlighten the masses.

"LIFE IS VERY SIMPLE REALLY!!!BUT SOME OF US HUMANS MAKE a MESS OF IT...REMEMBER AM JUST HERE TO HAVE FUN PARTEEEEEEE."

Unbeknownst to the party-hopping fugitive, a new acquaintance that he met at a local club was also a member of the U.S. Justice Department, whom stateside officials contacted to help capture the former nightclub rose salesman.

When convicted, this moron could face up to 30 years in prison.
